The securities markets rely massively on the information technology for transaction, settlement and repository purposes. Thus, cyber security and cyber resilience framework is an absolute necessity for protecting the data integrity and to guard against privacy breaches. 

SEBI has been vigilant to the increasing importance of cyber security and cyber resilience and has issued guidelines to the stock exchanges and depositories to carry out the necessary changes in their byelaws and to bring to the notice of  the brokers and members the guidelines about the identification, detection and monitoring of   cyber threats and ensuring   protection from the cyber threats by way of setting up  protocols for accessing the data, password protection policy, network security management, application security in customer facing application etc. SEBI has also laid down guidelines for the mutual funds / AMCs for enablement of cyber security and cyber resilience framework.

Since the cyber threats are significant operational risks that the market participants have to face, it is also important that the understanding of the necessity of protocols, network and physical hardware setups and cyber security policy is instilled in the minds of the staff employed at the broker or AMC office.
