A program on ‘Careers in Securities Markets’

National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) organized a public lecture by Dr. M. Venkateshwarlu, Associate Professor, NITIE, Mumbai and Mr. Sekkizhar Balasubramanian, Director-Deloitte, Mumbai, on the topic of ‘Careers in Securities Markets’. The event was held on Thursday – April 12, 2012 at NISM’s  Testing Center at Nariman Point, Mumbai.

Mr. M L Soneji, Registrar and Officiating Director of NISM, welcomed everyone and briefed about the role of NISM in building the quality of securities markets and its educational initiatives by organizing lectures every month on contemporary topics which may be of interest to investors and general public.

Prof. Sunder Ram Korivi pointed out gaps in Securities Markets education.  Today most of the professionals operating in securities markets have received education in various domains and added to their knowledge on their own.  Whereas CFA, CA, etc are high quality distance learning program, classroom based programs are mostly in MBA format.  MBA programs are more generic in nature with quality variation from institution to institution.  This gap is addressed by NISM’s School of Securities Education.  The Post Graduation Program in Securities Markets (PGPSM) offered by NISM is a focused and class room based program with specialized content and a strong faculty base with a focus on Securities Markets.  It is to be viewed more as MS in Finance.  This implies that the Securities Market possesses a body of knowledge with a definitive method of approach.

The PGPSM program is aimed at creating a complete Securities Markets professional.

Dr. M. Venkateshwarlu spoke specifically about business modules and their efficiency.  He explained the clear path from education program to institutions to Competencies and Career paths.  He further briefed about the various career opportunities and prospects in Securities Markets.  Professor explained the legal systems, financial regulation & corporate governance, the interrelationship with monetary institutions, financial structure, market infrastructure and other conditioning features.  Speaking about the financial systems, he explained how financial efficiency and financial stability can lead to the economic growth of the country.

He explained about various options available in the field of financial education and the need for a focused, practical program. He then shortly touched upon the roles and profiles available in various markets and financial intermediaries in the industry.

Mr. Sekkizhar Balasubramanian focused on the various career opportunities in securities markets and the need for focused education.  He stressed on the need for a clear link between concepts and applications by illustrating various careers available in the securities markets domain.
