Visit of Dr. M.S. Sahoo to NISM, Patalganga Campus

Dr. M. S. Sahoo, Former Chairperson, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India visited NISM, Patalganga campus and addressed students and faculty members of NISM during November 24-26,2021.

On November 24,2021 Dr. Sahoo addressed the students of NISM and the participants of SEBI Induction Programme as a part of recently introduced Leadership Lecture Series3on the topic “Economic Freedom: The soul of Business reforms”. While delivering the opening remarks during the Leadership Lecture Series, Dr. C.K.G. Nair, Director NISM extended a warm and cordial welcome to Dr. Sahoo and briefly narrated the contribution of Dr. Sahoo to securities markets, insolvency and bankruptcy framework etc. and his unique experience at different layers of regulation. He further appealed all the participants to take maximum advantage of his in-depth knowledge. Prof. Rachana Baid,  formally introduced Dr. Sahoo to the participants.

During his address, Dr. Sahoo elaborated on how  economic freedom has enhanced tremendously along with civic freedom. He narrated how the country has gone through three stages of economy freedom, viz. freedom to enter, to flourish and to exit. He further added that the economic freedom has expanded with the enactment of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code whereby necessary freedom is given to exit from unsustainable business. He added that these three aspects are the essential building blocks of economic freedom which ensures economic wellbeing of every nation.

On November 25, 2021, Dr. Sahoo, while addressing the participants, elaborated on the uniqueness of Securities Markets, its products, price, intermediaries, etc. and their linkages with economic growth. He also widely touched upon Market Physiognomies like rationale of regulations, disclosure regulations and regulation based developments. Real life examples from National and International markets and roles of different regulators were also discussed.

Later during the day Dr. Sahoo interacted with the faculty members of NISM. The faculty members had the rare privilege of listening to the real time experience of a visionary who has worked with four different main regulators of the country. The faculty members also had the opportunity to ask their doubts, for which Dr. Sahoo patiently responded to all the questions citing various instances out of his rich experience as a regulator.

Further during the classroom session held on November 26, 2021; Dr. Sahoo spoke about the factors that led to the emergence of Insolvency and Bankruptcy code and the cardinal role being played by Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code of India. All the sessions were not only enriching but also exciting. The participants had the opportunity of hearing and spending time with a veteran and visionary who was the architect behind various laws and regulations. The participants also expressed their interest to have many such sessions in the days to come.
