Online Programme on “Investigating Economic Crimes in Securities Markets” for Officers of Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO)|February 07 & 08, 2022

The School for Regulatory Studies and Supervision(SRSS) of National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) had conducted a Two-DayOnline Programme on “Investigating Economic Crimes in Securities Markets” for the Officers of Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO)on February 07 and 08, 2022.The programme was aimed at giving an overview of securities markets as well as various frauds and crimes which take place in securities markets.

Mr. Prabhat Ravi, Joint Director, SFIO introduced the theme of the programme and touched upon the need of knowledge of Securities Markets for SFIO officers.

Dr. CKG Nair, Director, NISMdelivered the opening remarks and highlighted upon the evolving regulations and the need for the officers to remain with the pace of the regulations. Mr. Keshav Chandra,IAS, Director, SFIO during his inaugural address highlighted on the Frauds which are happening in corporates and the efforts of SFIO to instil governance in the corporate sector. 

Dr.V. R. Narasimhan, Dean, NISM addressed the officers on Capital Market Eco System and gave an overview of securities markets including market infrastructure institution and its major aspects, SEBI’s regulatory approach, global linkages, impact of technology on securities markets and also how all these factors are interrelated.

Dr. Nitin Tike, General Manager, NISM explained the Financial Instruments traded in market like equity, debt, mutual funds, AIFs, Derivatives etc, structure of primary and secondary markets, Equity Trading, Clearing & Settlement and Risk Management at Exchanges.

Mr. Bireshwar Chatterjee, Vice President, NSE addressed the participants on Surveillance of Securities Markets – Exchange Perspective and Potential Manipulations in Derivative Trades wherein he explained various surveillance actions and measure, intraday alerts, EOD alerts, pattern recognition algorithm etc implemented by NSE. With the help of case studies, he clarified various doubts raised by the participants.

Mr. Suveer Khanna, Partner, KPMG deliberated on Investigating Frauds using Forensic Tools. He elaborated on various types of frauds in banking & capital markets and tools and techniques to approach an investigation and relevant case studies.

Ms. Shailashri Bhaskar, Practicing Company Secretary & Former DGM, SEBI gave an Overview of Insider Trading and PFUTP case laws. She explained how insider trading takes place and what kind of actions SEBI takes to curb it.

Mr. Keshav Chandra,IAS, Director, SFIO during the valedictory address highlighted the effectiveness of such programmes and how it benefits the officers of SFIO. He said that regular updation of legislations is the need of time to effectively carry out the assignments.

Mr.Sunil J Kadam, Registrar, NISM while proposing vote of thanks complimented the SFIO officers for successfully completing the Two day training programme.
